Mold, are you saying that univerals should be substituted for absolutes in philosophical arguements or that there are no really possibilites of absolute truths all together? I'm not a philosophy major, and I don't concider myself to be much of a thinker. I watched a documentary one time about absolutes in the mathematic world. It pretty much said that the randomness of all materials on a molecular level prevents any equation in the mathematic world from being 100% absolute. It has been until recent years that the string theory has been accepted by some scientific communities, and this is kind of following the pattern that nothig is of absolute truth.

Hrmm... absolute truth. Have you ever read nineteen eighty-four? (Department of Truth. 2+2=5)

Anyhow, the term 'absolute truth' has some need of being properly defined before going into it.

absolute (adj.)
Not limited by restrictions or exceptions; unconditional

Philosophically speaking I would argue that there is no such thing as absolute truth, well, there could be, but it would be a purely conceptual and redundant concept.

However, philosophy is somewhat detached from everyday life at times. So presuming we are actually capable of 'knowing' anything, and discarding things such as the impossibility of logically proving induction, (I am trying to go for absolute to all people) I would be tempted to call some thing absolute truth. I might be tempted to call F = m*a absolute truth, though it turns out that for high speeds this is not the case. Even Euclidean geometry will lose its validity when confronted with gravitational fields. What about relativity then? Well, quantum gravity is still an issue, and alternative interpretations ARE possible. (Which cant logically be true if relativity is also true, yet in it's predicted phenomena is logically equivalent to relativity.) Economics then? Well, I think we all suspect that those laws are by no means absolute, even keeping ceteris paribus in mind. (Just think of the price-demand development of potatoes during the Irish potato famine.) How about religion? I would find it hard to call such a thing absolute when there is a multitude of different religions, when there are hundreds of millions of of agnostic and atheist people, and even within most religions there is great disagreement over the interpretation. (E.g. some would call the bible's description of the creation of earth in 7 days to be a song of praise that is not to be taken literally, others might feel it is actually an account of history.) So at the very least it is not absolute when taken over the whole of humanity. History? I think I don't need to argue the relativity of history. (The difference between learning about Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a US or Japanese school, and the inexactness of it all.) Anyhow, I do believe such things could be said for any form of 'knowledge'. Logic may come close, but in the end it only takes 1 madman with warped logic to form an exception and invalidate the property of 'absoluteness'.

(PS. The aforementioned reflects my opinion. Obviously I'd be ironically impaired if I had any absolute truth-pretensions with what I have written above. )

Hey Crov, what you are talking about here with "absolute truths" is a pretty common problem in in practical philosophy.
