You could raise them to make your own armours and such, but its not really useful.
The only thing you need them for is to repair armors/weaps etc.

There is no need to go from mine A to mine B to get item C . . . .

And just as a pre-question before I try it out...  do I have to go to different areas to mine different things, and which places can be mined?
