Wanna know one of my pet peeve's?
It's people trying to be an English teacher by correcting everything you type and dictating to me that i should use correct spelling and grammar at all times.

I'm convinced people only correct other people's homophone related mistakes and complain about this purely to make themselves feel intelligent. 

I went too the shop yesterday and their i bought to box's of cereal!!!
Yeah see, i put the homophone related mistakes in bold for you, so now you can correct them and make yourself feel all big and clever.

Umm Roachie, I do not go around correcting people. Only time I have
commented on peoples grammar/spelling on this site is when:
A) They said how great their English skills were.
B) They were putting someone else down.
C) I seriously could not understand them.

This was not making fun of anyone. This is just a little help for those
on the board that are using the wrong words, and do care. They are
COMMON mistakes, so I posted them. So... Your little statement
is a little off.

You are correct. It is from speech which these things are derived.
But, how I look at it, if we could speak correctly, we would have
less grammatical problems. I see no problems with "You're" in
writing. Though, also correct it is pointless when you say,
"you are." I just suggest it a little backwards, I guess... Cause
I feel that if people spoke correctly the writing we read would
be much more grammatically correct.

Fireborn: I am also horrible with the English language, I am
obsessed with commas, and put them where I see fit based
on how I speak. This is bad practice, but like I said... I think
writing should be more based on speech.

I actually mess both of these up when I start drinking. My English isnt the best to begin with but boy do i use than in place of then when I start to drink. Their and there I don't bother with that much, but they're I never do wrong. However when I say your instead of you're I usually catch it and do the little you're***. Unless of course I am drinking then well.. meh

Uhm, imho you got that reversed. ;-)

While you may argue that it should be used in neither spoken nor written language, I personally always believed that when written this was informal written language derived from speech. If people would say "They are" then  I dun think "They're" would've found its way into written language.

Again, you would be right to say that the contractions (which I believe find their origin in lazy speech rather than lazy writing) caused the problem in written language here. But to say it should therefore be integrated into written language whilst removing it from spoken language would seem like the world upsidedown to me. If it's that harmful, removing it from both would seem more logical.

But then again, I am by no means certain of the validity of my statements. Nor do I have any validity, being both uneducated in English grammar and a non-native speaker of the language. So ah, well... just thought I'd say that what you said seemed odd to me.
