]]> Thu, 11 Jan 2007 21:21:51 +0000 https://www.faldon.org/post/59615/#p59615 <![CDATA[Re: This is nice!]]> https://www.faldon.org/post/59613/#p59613 I really dislike punBB and I don't think we've really made a step forward in the prevention of spam.  In all honesty,  all that has been accomplished is to make the forum run a less popular software.  So, in theory, the spammer's software won't be as likely to be able to use punBB.  However, punBB is just as bad as phpBB to administer.  phpBB makes you go through and delete each post and topic individually.  This software is more or less the same.  The point being, if the spammers return, we're no better equipped to stop them.  Other software, such as SMF (Simplemachines Forum) offers much better administration including a much easier interface for deleting posts and topics, much more indepth permissions which could have allowed moderators to ban spammers, as well as other good admin features.  Also, as tim has lamented, this software marks posts new until you relog.  Even phpBB wasn't THAT bad.  But, one advantage SMF offers over phpBB and punBB in that department is that it marks posts unread individually.  That is, if I log in and only view one of the posts that is new, the others will still be marked new tomorrow when I log in.  phpBB would mark all posts unread as soon as you logout/session expires.  That is not really very friendly, especially when you have to go take care of something else in the middle of reading or when there are a large number of new posts and you don';t have time to sit down and read them all at once.
I'm glad that the spammers are gone and all, but I just feel we've not improved at all.  I would almost go so far as to say that we've taken a step backwards.

He did say he'd change to PunBB tomorrow, but hadnt in all honesty expected such swift action to be in fact, taken. Too bad that we're no longer forced to all use anime-avatars though, haha... smile

I have no real visual preference for this or phpBB, this seems cleaner, more to the point, yet because phpBB is so widespread its style is recognizable and easy-to-use, but I guess this'll grow on me eventually.
