I think the biggest reason was actually for things like crafting, sure you could do some of it in a house or GH or something. But things like gathering materials (mining or LJing) or God forbid trying to use the BSE, you're one "s pets free" away from yard selling piles of materials. Aura won't help you here.

Very convenient update for the trolls of the game though.

i mean there is 50 other reasons to why its in the game but its a  "Good Find! Thanks!" I guess.
