Topic: i need some help with a video card

I just bought a geforce fx 5200 256mb, and i got it in today. So I put it in and plug the monitor in the card and turn pc on. Everything works fine and i install the driver then restart. When it restarts the monitor no longer works.  The only way i can get the monitor working is to plug it back in the built in video card(s3/unichrome 64mb). I'm running windows xp with 1gig ram and 2gig celeron processor.  I've already tried disabling the other video card and reinstalling the drivers.  I do know that the video card is hooked in the computer the right way because the fan on the card runs. SO I'd greatly appreciate some suggestions..+ i'll reward anyone with 1k gold if their suggestion works smile Thanks in advance

Put the vid card in the microwave for 15 minutes.

Re: i need some help with a video card

do you have another slot to put the card in? maybe the expansion slot is bad...come to think of it, you might just want to make sure the card is securly in the expansion slot it's in now.  is this doesn't work, maybe the graphics card is bad......there's really no reason other than that for it not to work that i can think of...

Re: i need some help with a video card

Why would you get a FX5200 anyway?

Re: i need some help with a video card

When swapping from on-board video to a plug in video card you need to swap the settings in your Bios. Otherwise it will always take the onboard as default.

Had the same problem....fixed as above.

Re: i need some help with a video card

The video card is in correctly and I've switched it out with another video card and everything works fine. I guess the only option is to send it back

you shouldn't need to do that because most graphics cards these days are plug and play and the software with the drivers should take care of any changes needed...i'm definately sure that this is the case with nvidia cards.....are you sure you installed the drivers correctly?

i haven't had to change the bios manually on any hardware upgrades since i installed a my old single speed cd rom drive like ten years ago...

Re: i need some help with a video card

well, my friend.......i'd have to look up the manual for my card(i have a huge box of manuals somewhere dating back to my old packard bell 286), but i believe that you might have had to install the drivers before you install the card.

Re: i need some help with a video card

How do you find out what your video card is?

17

Re: i need some help with a video card

Right click on desktop > Properties > Settings tab

Then it says:

'<monitor name> on <video card name>' above the screen resolution thingy.

Re: i need some help with a video card

Ah cool. I never knew that =P

It says I have a 'Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller'

On a scale from 1-10 how good is that? =P

Re: i need some help with a video card

It sounds like an on-board VGA card (they suck).

21

Re: i need some help with a video card

Is it out of date? If it is, how long ago did it not suck?

Yeah, that's a waste. Faldon can run with much lower specs.
