Re: Server Down?

So, I don't know anything about the internal workings of a game; what does a game server being down entail to get it back up? Why do they go down?
It's just been down for like twelve hours now and my curiosity get the better of me after my irritation subsided. tongue

this is hurrendous its been down since last night I put in a ticket for the error msg. I wonder if anything is even being done about this problem yet.

I doubt there would be anything done. Zer isn't frequently on... Like once a year? (I'm being generous too)

Angeldust,

It's funny really; I have always followed the forums during the periods that I played the game, and I've always thought you to be an obnoxious prick, but despite this, I figured that it would be you, or Mumblebee that would explain this with at least a minute degree of knowledge or interest (at the very least, I'm not in the least surprised you would harass me  (props for staying true to you and not failing to disappoint)).
I acknowledged my ignorance in my very first line; I only PLAY games (normally large ones where down time is a huge revenue loss,) I don't program or manage them. I actually had a genuine interest in what a "server being down," meant. I do NOT know what a server being "down" is, because even with Faldon,  I have never experienced down time this long before. Truth be told I initially thought it must have been a server maintenance "thing." I do have a degree of interest in computers, and especially during periods of boredom I like to read up on this stuff. I acknowledge the poorly chosen words of my original post, I am genuinely asking that if you wont tell me what to expect with this particular instance of server "downness?" give me a starting point to read up on Wikipedia even. I was asking to understand better.

If you solely troll my message, without ANY help I will disregard it. Pretty please?

Got to love how GM's or higher don't reassure us by telling us the problem or when it'll be fixed by. Makes me think they really don't give a f*ck about this game anymore.

Re: Server Down?

I acknowledge that they must have lives outside of Faldon GM-ness, they <could perhaps?> be unaware. As I have clearly stated my lack of knowledge about online game mechanics, I'm not sure if there is even an email alert to say, "HEY, the game server isn't responding."

I don't imagine GMs get paid in any meaningful way as this game has become much smaller since I first started and membership costs only $5 a month, and as such, I don't have overly high expectations from them. Maybe we will hear something constructive soon?

You know, oddly I feel inclined to provide you this tidbit of basic knowledge, simply because you are genuine in wanting to understand and persistent in seeking it; even after my blatant disregard for your original question.

The most basic of 'online games' can establish peer to peer network connections via the client, without a server. That is, the clients can communicate between hosts. The limitations in this, is very few connections can be made, usually just as the term implies, "peer to peer". Aside from that, LAN (local are network) parties were common as the old school methods of connecting a handful of clients (hosts) together for "online" or multiplayer gaming.

The basis of that information, is to understand what a server is, or does. To enable massively multiplayer online gaming (or even Faldons 10  people) there must exist a medium to handle connections, process and provide updated information to all the clients that have established a connection. Essentially, when you 'connect' to Faldon, your establishing a TCP connection to the Faldon server. Anything you do on your client is communicated to the server, and communicated to all relevant clients. In the most basic sense, it literally serves information to the clients as a central hub which enables the online gaming.

The "server" that you know is simply a program written to handle the connections and process client requests among many other things such as monster spawns, character stats, account information, etc. The server must be online 24/7 which obviously will require a piece of hardware (believe Zer runs Faldon on a Linux box) dedicated to hosting the connections.

When the server goes down? Quite literally, the server becomes inaccessible or no longer able to process requests. This can happen for multiple reasons; in recent memory Zer had a memory leak in his software code as well as hardware issues for the physical box that prevented his server from being online 24/7. In this case, it could be as simple as the software server needing to be restarted due to a crash. It could be that he hasn't paid his bills and his provider has terminated the connection. There are many reasons that would require Zers manual intervention.

We wish.... but how the fuck did you associate the need to be wiped, with being it down? Where the fuck did that novel idea get its correlation in your pathetic mind?

Re: Server Down?

^----- Thanks! That was actually relatively explanatory "In the most basic sense." wink  I had some Idea as to what it kiiiiiinnnd of was, but I think I was kind of wrong. I had kind of thought it was something that should be able to be fixed by a GM, even though in my heart I knew it wasn't and that I remembered being told it was a "Zer Problem." I didn't know the server was a tangible "thing," but was under the impression it was more like a "super" client, so-to-speak.

I never really knew what the "server" was for, other than that it was necessary. I understand it in its simplicity, that you have broken it down to.
Thank you.

PS. I know it does not effect you as you don't play any longer, but  I hope its not a big problem like his box lighting on fire or something. Hopefully it will only require a breaker to be flicked in his house or what ever.
PPS. I just made Chicken and wild rice soup which I will enjoy in your honor because I can offer no other gratuity.

Re: Server Down?

youre brain is so large you seemed to have missed the reference to the server "pooping" itself, as artee suggested. so i merely asked if it needed to be wiped, as do most things that poop themselves.

Re: Server Down?

lol greg,
server crashed and idk whats up and why it is not online yet. usually it restarts itself.
btw i dont have communication with zer so who knows when this will be rectified.
maybe spy can get ahold of him  roll
